Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has assured residents of Anfoega and surrounding communities of concrete interventions to restore reliable and sustainable water supply following prolonged shortages that have affected livelihoods and public health.
The assurance was given when the Managing Director of GWL, Mr. Adam Mutawakilu, led a high-level management team on a courtesy call to the Paramount Chief of Anfoega Akukome, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, at Anfoega Akukome in the North Dayi District of the Volta Region.
The visit formed part of Ghana Water Limited’s renewed strategy to engage directly with communities and traditional authorities as it works to resolve long-standing operational challenges within the water sector. It also provided an opportunity for management to assess firsthand the water situation in Anfoega and parts of Kpando, where residents have endured persistent water shortages.
Mr. Mutawakilu was accompanied by senior officials of the company, including the Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo; Chief Manager for Corporate Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr. Michael Klutse; Chief Manager of Operations, Ing. Amidu Musah; Chief Manager for Public Relations and Communication, Mr. Stanley Martey; Chief Manager for the Volta Region, Ing. Emmanuel Johnson, among others.
Welcoming the delegation, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV—who also serves as President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs—commended the Managing Director for demonstrating commitment and urgency in addressing the water crisis. He noted that previous engagements with the company had not yielded meaningful results, forcing residents to rely on unsafe water sources with serious health implications.
The Paramount Chief stressed that the lack of potable water had exposed the community to water-borne diseases and negatively impacted livelihoods. He therefore welcomed the renewed engagement and called for sustained collaboration to permanently resolve the challenge.
“For you to come personally to assess the situation and listen to our concerns is commendable. Let us work together to resolve this problem once and for all,” Togbe Tepre Hodo IV said, in the presence of sub-chiefs and queen mothers who also highlighted the urgency of the situation.
In response, Mr. Mutawakilu explained that the Kpando Water Treatment Plant, which serves Anfoega and neighboring communities, has an installed capacity of about 6,400 cubic metres per day. However, current daily production averages approximately 3,000 cubic metres—about 47 percent of capacity—due to operational constraints.
He noted that the production gap presents an opportunity for improvement and assured that GWL would procure high-quality pipes of the appropriate size to address distribution challenges and meet both current and future demand. According to him, the company is committed to implementing long-term, durable solutions rather than temporary measures.
The Managing Director further disclosed that GWL’s technical teams are continuously assessing the system to identify and resolve operational bottlenecks affecting water production and distribution in the region.
He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the Government’s Water for All agenda under President John Dramani Mahama, pledging that Ghana Water Limited would work tirelessly to ensure equitable access to safe and reliable water for all communities.
“I want to assure you that we will do everything possible to ensure that water flows again. His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama will be glad to hear that communities here have access to water,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated.
