In a continued effort to clamp down on illegal mining activities, the Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested seven individuals engaged in galamsey operations along the Black Volta River. The arrest took place on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at Chiantanga, a community near Dorimon in the Wa West District.

The suspects — Sabugu Razak, Ibrahim Zuberu, Alex Amedzake, John Cobblah, Promise Dufe, Angelina Akpese, and Rebecca Tumawu — were caught operating at an illegal mining site on the river.

Authorities retrieved ten Changfang machines used for dredging, two unregistered tricycles, two motorbikes with registration numbers M-24NR 6010 and M-23-UW 4413, and two unregistered Haojue and Apsonic motorbikes. Also found at the scene were six student mattresses, raising concerns about potential on-site residency or extended stays.

All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and will be arraigned in court.

The Upper West Regional Police Command reaffirmed its determination to eradicate illegal mining, which poses a serious threat to Ghana’s water bodies, environment, and communities.
