Prof. Enyonam Yao Kwawukume, Chairman of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), has challenged newly inducted members of the College to rise above routine medical practice and become innovators capable of transforming healthcare delivery in Ghana.
Speaking at the Membership Induction and Graduation Ceremony in Accra, Prof. Kwawukume urged the graduates to anchor their careers in ethical conduct, innovation, and collaboration. He noted that professional excellence begins from within, explaining that a calm, confident, and disciplined doctor is better positioned to grow and make meaningful impact in medical practice.
He called on the new specialists to cultivate a research-driven mindset, stressing that groundbreaking ideas are not the preserve of senior consultants alone. Drawing on historical examples from medical training, he reminded the inductees that some of the most impactful innovations in medicine were born from simple observations made by inquisitive young doctors.
Prof. Kwawukume encouraged the graduates to see Ghana as fertile ground for innovation, dismissing the notion that medical breakthroughs must originate from outside the country. According to him, the local health system presents real-life challenges that demand creative, homegrown solutions capable of improving patient outcomes.
Touching on professionalism, he underscored the importance of respect and humility in medical practice. He advised the new doctors to value every member of the healthcare team—from senior colleagues to support staff—explaining that effective healthcare delivery depends on mutual respect and cooperation.
The GCPS Chairman praised parents and guardians for their sacrifices and commended the leadership and faculty of the College for their commitment to training highly skilled specialists. He noted that strong teamwork within the institution had played a critical role in sustaining high standards in postgraduate medical education.
He concluded by reminding the graduates that medicine is a collective effort, urging them to rely on the professional networks they have built in wards, theatres, and emergency units to overcome complex cases and succeed in their careers.
