The People’s National Party (PNP) has lauded President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his service to Ghana as he delivered his final State of the Nation Address (SONA). In a statement issued by the party’s Chairperson and Leader, Janet Asana Nabla, the PNP expressed gratitude to the outgoing President and the 9th Parliament for their commitment to governance over the past eight years.

Reflecting on his administration’s legacy, the PNP highlighted key achievements, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) program, which expanded access to secondary education and eliminated inequities in the system. The party also commended the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law, describing it as a milestone in promoting gender equality and inclusivity.

While acknowledging these accomplishments, the PNP noted the challenges faced during the President’s tenure, including economic hardships, job losses, and the high cost of living. The party attributed some of these issues to global factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war but also called for shared accountability between the government and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their inability to mitigate the crisis.

Looking ahead, the PNP proposed a constitutional amendment to allow former Presidents and Vice Presidents to serve on the Council of State, citing their experience as invaluable to national development.

As President Akufo-Addo prepares to leave office, the PNP extended prayers and best wishes, urging him to assume the role of a unifying father figure for all political parties.
