The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has developed a policy to enhance the working conditions of fuel tanker drivers.
The Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Kudzo Tameklo Esq., said the draft policy would ensure consistency in the remuneration of fuel tanker drivers.
The draft policy is pending approval from the yet to be constituted Governing Board of the Authority.
He made this known when he interacted with gas tanker drivers at the Quantum Terminals at Anokyi.
The tanker drivers met the announcement with thunderous applause and broad smiles.
Mr. Tameklo noted that the NPA pays the allowances of tanker drivers from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) to ensure uniformity in the price of petroleum products across the country.
He stressed the need to give fuel tanker drivers improved remuneration to take care of their families.
That, he said, would prevent diversions and ensure the safe transportation of petroleum products.
“If fuel tanker drivers are paid well, they will not divert fuel products and no damage to vehicles”, he said.
Responding, Mr. Kwame Mensah, Local Vice Chairman, LPG Tanker Drivers Association, said the announcement of a draft policy to improve conditions of service of fuel tanker drivers was welcome news.
He stated that the policy would enhance the living conditions of fuel tanker drivers who had been advocating for improvements in their service conditions for a long time.
Mr. Mensah expressed gratitude on behalf of the tanker drivers to the NPA for the initiative aimed at improving their lives.
Earlier, the NPA Boss visited the Atuabo Gas processing plant and the Gas Complex to apprise himself with their operations. He also met key industry players .
Meanwhile, Mr. Tameklo held separate meetings with the Western and the Central Regional Security Councils as part of the tour.
At both meetings, Mr. Tameklo, Esq. called for an effective collaboration among security agencies to curtail illicit fuel smuggling and supply to illegal mining (galamsey) sites.
He stated that smuggled fuel is utilized to power excavations for galamsey activities. Thus, cutting off the fuel supply to these sites would greatly reduce the problem.
That, he said, would support President John Dramani Mahama’s fight against galamsey.
In the Western Region, Mr. Tameklo paid a courtesy call on the Omanhen of the Essikado Traditional Area, Nana Kobina Nketsia V, and in the Central Region, he paid a courtesy call on the Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II.
