Tension is rising within the Okaikwei Central Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following an alleged violent attack on the constituency’s 1st Vice Chairman, Alhaji Harruna Rafik, after a mediation meeting over disputed polling station elections.
According to Alhaji Rafik, the shocking incident occurred immediately after a meeting chaired by the Greater Accra Regional Secretary at the residence of the area’s Member of Parliament, Patrick Yaw Boamah.
The meeting was reportedly convened to address a petition filed by Alhaji Rafik concerning alleged irregularities and the mishandling of the ongoing polling station elections within the constituency.
However, moments after leaving the venue, Alhaji Rafik alleged that he was ambushed and violently attacked by about seven masked men in the presence of some constituency executives and directly in front of the MP’s residence.
Describing the incident as “shocking and disgraceful,” the embattled party executive said his only offence was demanding transparency, fairness, and due process in the conduct of the internal elections.
He disclosed that he sustained injuries during the attack and has since reported the matter to the Police while receiving treatment at a community hospital in Accra.
Alhaji Rafik further condemned what he described as attempts to silence dissenting voices within the party through intimidation and violence.
“Intimidation, violence, and fear tactics will never silence some of us from defending truth, justice, and the integrity of our party,” he stated.
The incident has sparked concerns among party supporters and political observers over rising tensions surrounding internal party elections ahead of future political contests.
Alhaji Rafik has called on the regional and national leadership of the NPP, as well as security agencies, to launch immediate investigations into the attack and ensure that all persons behind the incident are identified and prosecuted.
