The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is set to embark on a major transformation drive beginning this year, aimed at expanding its capacity and enhancing specialist clinical service delivery.
Management of the hospital has outlined a series of monumental projects expected to reposition the premier referral facility as a centre of excellence in advanced healthcare services in Ghana and beyond.
Already, construction has commenced on a multi-million-dollar, state-of-the-art catheterization laboratory (Cathlab) and cardiac intervention centre under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Cares.”
The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, disclosed this during the hospital’s 2025 Performance Review Conference held in Kumasi.
According to Dr. Baidoo, the new cardiac facility will significantly strengthen the hospital’s ability to diagnose and treat complex heart conditions locally, reducing the need for patients to seek expensive treatment abroad.
He further revealed that management, with strong backing from the hospital’s Board, has undertaken several key initiatives within the year under review. These include the procurement of assorted medical equipment such as intensive care unit (ICU) beds, patient monitors, and the maintenance and restoration of critical medical equipment.
“These interventions have contributed to improved service delivery and a notable reduction in institutional mortality rates,” he stated.

Staff Motivation Measures

Dr. Baidoo emphasized that staff welfare remains central to the hospital’s transformation agenda.
Management, he said, has introduced several measures to boost morale and productivity among workers.
Among the interventions implemented are a 100 percent increase in responsibility allowances for managers, promotion of all deserving staff, and improved conditions of service across departments.
He added that nearly 90 percent of applications submitted by staff for further academic and professional studies were approved in 2025 as part of efforts to build capacity and sustain professional excellence within the institution.

Commitment to Quality Healthcare

The KATH CEO reiterated management’s commitment to leveraging the hospital’s vast human resource base, infrastructure, and clinical experience to deliver healthcare services that meet the growing expectations of patients.
He noted that ongoing reforms are designed to strengthen specialist care, improve patient outcomes, and position KATH as a leading medical hub in West Africa.

Call for Compassionate Care

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Fred Adomako Boateng, urged the hospital’s management and staff to complement infrastructure expansion with improved patient relations.
He stressed the importance of customer care, compassion, patience, and professionalism in healthcare delivery, noting that quality treatment must go hand in hand with humane service.
Dr. Boateng encouraged health workers to maintain high ethical standards and prioritize patient dignity as the hospital pursues its ambitious transformation agenda.
