The Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has assured the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) that every pesewa of the GH¢8.4 million allocated for rehabilitating damaged water supply systems will be used transparently and for its intended purpose.
Speaking during the signing of a strategic partnership agreement between the two institutions, Mr. Mutawakilu described GoldBod’s intervention as timely and critical in addressing the growing impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s water infrastructure.
He disclosed that after assuming office, Ghana Water Limited realised that the extent of damage caused by illegal mining to major water bodies and treatment facilities was beyond the capacity of the utility company to address alone.
This, he said, prompted the company to seek support from GoldBod.
According to him, the request was followed by the formation of a joint technical team, which visited the affected sites and confirmed the urgent need for rehabilitation.
“I want to assure you that whatever you are giving us will be accounted for. We will ensure that every item outlined in the agreement is fully implemented,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated.
He said successful execution of the first phase would strengthen Ghana Water Limited’s case for additional support to rehabilitate the remaining affected facilities.
Mr. Mutawakilu further announced that officials would engage stakeholders and staff in the Central and Western regions ahead of the commencement of the rehabilitation works.
He expressed appreciation to GoldBod’s management and board for supporting the project, describing the partnership as a major boost to efforts to restore safe and reliable drinking water to communities affected by environmental degradation.
