The Minister for Defence, Hon. Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, has outlined an ambitious modernization plan to transform the Ghana Armed Forces over the next three and a half years. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on July 21, 2025, Dr. Omane Boamah said the plan includes a $1 billion investment to retool the Army, Navy, and Air Force with advanced equipment, digital communication systems, and improved tactical vehicles.
He announced that 12,000 new personnel will be recruited to support Ghana’s evolving defence needs, with a specific focus on expertise in agriculture, engineering, and health sciences, aligning military capacity with national development.
The Defence Industries Holding Company (DIHOC), which is undergoing revitalization, will spearhead military-led industrial and infrastructure projects. Plans are underway to partner with Ghana Bauxite Company on a major 180km road project and play a strategic role in constructing the six-lane Accra–Kumasi expressway.
Dr. Omane Boamah assured the public that recruitment would be based on merit, not money, and issued a strong warning against fraudsters. Additionally, the government has resolved long-standing issues stalling the Afari Military Hospital, while new accommodation projects aim to address a 17,000-unit housing deficit within the military.
This defence transformation aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s RESET Ghana Agenda, which prioritizes national resilience, institutional reform, and economic recovery through integrated sectoral development.
