Accra is gearing up for a historic celebration as the Bukom Boxing Arena prepares to host the inaugural Juneteenth Boxing Tournament on Saturday, June 21, 2025. This pioneering event, organized by Bishop Boxing Promotion, promises an electrifying mix of sport, culture, and social activism, bringing together elite boxers from Ghana and the United States in honor of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth, observed annually on June 19, marks the end of slavery in the United States. Known also as Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day, the holiday serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggles for freedom and equality—values at the heart of the tournament.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dave Bishop, founder of Bishop Boxing Promotion, emphasized the deeper significance of the tournament. “The Juneteenth boxing tournament isn’t just about sports—it’s a celebration of freedom, equality, and the ongoing pursuit of justice,” he said. “As a proud Ghanaian, I’m committed to giving back to the motherland and contributing to its development.”

The tournament will feature six high-stakes bouts across various weight classes, showcasing the prowess of top-tier athletes from both nations. Beyond the ring, attendees can expect an array of festivities, including live music, cultural performances, a 2-kilometer community run, a special reception, and an after-party.

Proceeds from the event will be used to renovate the Wisdom Boxing Gym, a key training hub for young athletes in Ghana, upgrading it into a world-class facility to nurture future champions.

Sanctioned by the Ghana Boxing Authority and powered by Bishop Boxing Promotion, the Juneteenth Boxing Tournament is poised to become a landmark event in Ghana’s sporting calendar—celebrating heritage, bridging cultures, and promoting social impact through sport.
