Speaking at a media training session on Chinese Lending Strategy and Ghana’s Debt Sustainability, ACEP Policy Analyst Mr. Mohammed Saani Osman disclosed that Ghana secured $5.4 billion in loans from China between 2000 and 2022, making it the 10th highest recipient in Africa.

He emphasized that loan agreements with China often include confidentiality clauses, resource-backed repayment terms, and contractor restrictions favoring Chinese firms, limiting local economic benefits.

Mr. Osman warned that the stringent conditions attached to these loans could weaken the cedi, slow down local industrial growth, and create long-term economic challenges. He urged policymakers to prioritize sustainable borrowing practices to safeguard Ghana’s financial future.
