Pupils at Obom receive learning materials, health screening from Lions Club

By Sebastian Syme More than 500 pupils of the Reverend Father Henry Roman Catholic Basic School at Obom in the Greater Accra Region have benefited from an educational and health intervention by the Accra Premier Lions Club and its partners. The initiative provided the pupils with books, pens, pencils, shoes and medicated lenses, alongside free health screening and eye examinations. It was organised under the Accra Premier Lions Club’s “Touching Lives Through Service” programme, which focuses on community interventions aimed at improving the welfare of children and other vulnerable groups. Health professionals from the Greater Accra Regional Hospital and Empatcaiquo were on hand to conduct the medical and eye examinations as part of the exercise. The Immediate Past President of the Accra Premier Lions Club, Ms. Lucy Gyata, said the club considered access to basic educational materials and healthcare essential to the development of children. She said the intervention was intended to address some of the immediate needs of pupils while contributing to their ability to learn in a supportive environment. “We decided to support these pupils with some essential educational and health-related items because we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a conducive environment and have access to basic healthcare,” she said. Ms Gyata said the initiative reflected the club’s commitment to using community service to make a tangible difference in the lives of people. “Under our ‘Touching Lives Through Service’ programme, we want to make a positive and lasting impact in the lives of children, particularly those in communities where such support is needed most,” she added. Members of the Accra Premier Lions Club and Lions Clubs International, Brooklyn District 20-K1, also took part in the programme and interacted with the pupils. The health component of the intervention provided an opportunity for potential health and eye-related conditions among the pupils to be identified, while the educational supplies were intended to support their day-to-day learning. Speaking on behalf of the school and the beneficiaries, Reverend Father Paul Ebo Quarshie expressed gratitude to the Lions Club and its partners for the support. He said the intervention would help address some of the challenges faced by the pupils and contribute to improving their educational experience. “We are incredibly grateful to the Accra Premier Lions Club and all their partners for coming to support our children. This intervention means a lot to the school and the pupils,” Rev. Fr. Quarshie said. He said the educational materials would provide practical assistance to the pupils, while the health screening would help identify concerns that could potentially interfere with their education. “The educational items will go a long way towards supporting the children in their learning, while the health screening will also help identify and address health concerns that could affect their education,” he added. Mr. Ormond Brathwaite of Lions District 20-K1 said the organisation remained committed to extending its humanitarian activities to communities where such interventions were needed. He said collaboration among members and partners would enable the Lions to reach more children and vulnerable people. “Our commitment is to continue to touch more lives through sustainable humanitarian projects. We believe that by working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people, particularly children and vulnerable groups,” Mr Brathwaite said. He added that the organisation would continue to identify communities where its support could have a lasting impact. “We will continue to look for opportunities to extend our service to more communities and support initiatives that improve the health, education, and general well-being of the people,” he said. The Obom exercise forms part of the Lions’ broader humanitarian activities in education, healthcare and community development.
