The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), in consultation with the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), has approved pension indexation for 2026, significantly boosting benefits for low-income pensioners and strengthening the minimum pension floor.
The decision, taken in line with Section 80 of the National Pensions Act, 2008 (Act 766), aims to cushion pensioners against rising living costs while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the pension scheme.
As part of the 2026 indexation, the minimum monthly pension for new pensioners has been increased from GH¢300.00 to GH¢400.00. Existing pensioners who were previously receiving the minimum pension of GH¢300.00 will now earn GH¢409.56 per month after redistribution, representing a substantial increase of 36.52 percent.
SSNIT explained that the overall pension indexation rate for 2026 is 10 percent, applied through a combination of a fixed 6 percent increase for all pensioners and a redistributed flat amount of GH¢91.86, derived from the remaining four percent. This redistribution mechanism is designed to ensure that pensioners at the lower end of the scale receive more meaningful increases.
Management noted that the indexation prioritises low-income pensioners while maintaining fairness across the pension spectrum. The approach is rooted in the solidarity principle of social security, which seeks to moderate disparities and protect vulnerable pensioners.
Several factors informed the 2026 indexation decision, including salary growth among active contributors, a projected average inflation rate of 8.2 percent by the end of 2025, and the need to safeguard the Fund’s long-term financial health.
While low-income pensioners will enjoy higher effective increases due to redistribution, higher-earning pensioners will receive adjustments closer to the general indexation rate. Accordingly, the highest-earning SSNIT pensioner, who received GH¢201,792.37 as of December 31, 2025, will earn GH¢213,991.47 per month in 2026.
SSNIT emphasised that pensions under the defined benefit scheme are tied to salaries on which contributions were made, reinforcing the link between lifetime earnings and retirement benefits.
Pensions continue to be paid on the third Thursday of every month.
