The Retired Footballers Association of Ghana has intensified calls for improved welfare and recognition for former players following a courtesy visit to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
The meeting, held at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra, brought together key stakeholders committed to preserving Ghana’s rich football heritage. The delegation was led by the Association’s President, James Kuuku Dadzie, and included celebrated former players whose contributions helped shape the country’s sporting legacy.
Welcoming the delegation, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, expressed optimism about building a structured collaboration between government and retired athletes to address longstanding welfare concerns.
Speaking on behalf of the association, Mr. Dadzie stressed the urgent need for a strong institutional partnership to safeguard the wellbeing of retired footballers. He recalled Ghana’s golden football era, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations triumphs in 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982, achievements that firmly established the nation as a continental powerhouse.
Minister Adams acknowledged the historic role played by former footballers in elevating Ghana’s global sporting reputation. He commended the association for its initiative and reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening welfare systems for retired athletes.
According to him, ongoing reforms include plans for expanded post-retirement opportunities, enhanced health support packages, and the establishment of a dedicated Sports Fund. The proposed fund, he explained, would not only support active sports development but also cater to the welfare needs of retired players.
The Minister further announced intentions to institutionalize annual commemorative events to celebrate past football heroes, emphasizing that their legacy remains foundational to Ghana’s continued prominence in African football.
“The strength of a family is how well it is connected to the old,” he remarked, urging closer collaboration to develop sustainable policies that honor former players while inspiring the next generation.
Members of the delegation included legendary figures such as Mohammed Polo, Abdul Razak, George Alhassan, Rev. Osei Kofi, Rev. Kofi Pare, and Mr. Willie Kluste.
The visit marks a significant step toward institutional recognition and sustained support for Ghana’s football legends, a move many believe is long overdue in preserving the nation’s proud sporting heritage.
