The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewa Ocloo, has officially launched the authorization and distribution of the Nkukor Nkitinkiti Project under the Feed Ghana Programme, describing it as a major step toward restoring Ghana’s productive capacity and reducing unemployment through agriculture-led growth.
The ceremony, held in Accra, also saw the Regional Minister take delivery of equipment from the National Apprenticeship Programme for onward distribution to beneficiaries, as well as Nkukor Nkitinkiti inputs from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA). In addition, she presented extra streetlights to all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region to enhance security and improve living conditions.
Addressing participants, Hon. Ocloo said the Nkukor Nkitinkiti Project forms a strategic component of government’s resetting agenda aimed at rebuilding critical sectors of the economy and empowering households to produce what they consume.
She explained that the initiative will support families across the country to engage in poultry production, particularly fresh eggs and chicken, while strengthening small, medium and large-scale poultry operations under a three-track strategy.
“Today’s gathering marks the commencement of an important exercise, which is the formal authorization of the Nkukor Nkitinkiti Project and distribution of day-old chicks and essential inputs to beneficiaries across the region,” she stated.
According to her, each constituency is expected to receive allocations under the programme, while individual beneficiaries will be supported with birds, feed and technical assistance to ensure sustainable production.
Hon. Ocloo urged MMDAs to ensure transparent, fair and diligent distribution of the inputs, stressing that the success of the project depends largely on effective implementation at the local level.
She commended the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the Feed Ghana Secretariat and all partners for translating national policy into practical, people-centred solutions, describing the intervention as “resetting agenda in action.”
Feed Ghana Coordinator Explains Rationale and Impact
Delivering a separate address, the National Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme, Hon. Bright E. K. Demordzi, said the Nkukor Nkitinkiti Initiative was introduced to reverse the severe decline in Ghana’s poultry industry.
He revealed that before the rollout of the Feed Ghana Programme in 2025, Ghana’s annual poultry demand stood at about 350,000 metric tonnes, while local production was only about 15,000 metric tonnes, less than five percent of national needs.
“As a result, Ghana spends about 300 million US dollars annually importing frozen chicken, leading to pressure on our foreign exchange reserves, collapse of local farms and job losses across the poultry value chain,” he noted.
Hon. Demordzi said the initiative was launched in Kumasi in November 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama as a flagship intervention to rebuild producer confidence and strengthen the poultry value chain from breeding to processing and marketing.
He outlined key components of the programme, including:
Selection and deployment of service providers in all MMDAs
Provision of day-old chicks, feed, vaccines and veterinary support
Four weeks of intensive brooding to reduce mortality
Final distribution of birds to registered household beneficiaries
He announced that Greater Accra has now reached the final stage of the programme, with birds ready for distribution to beneficiaries who have already been registered.
The Feed Ghana Coordinator projected that the initiative would raise local poultry production from five percent to 15 percent in the short term, potentially saving Ghana about US$30 million annually, while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.
On behalf of the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, Hon. Demordzi confirmed that beneficiary registration forms have been dispatched to all MMDAs nationwide and that the rollout prioritizes youth, women-led enterprises and small-scale farmers.
“In conclusion, Ghana can no longer afford to import what it has the capacity to produce,” he said, adding that Nkukor Nkitinkiti serves as an economic revitalisation tool, employment generator and food security intervention.
The event ended with the official declaration by Hon. Linda Obenewa Ocloo launching the Nkukor Nkitinkiti distribution in the Greater Accra Region.
