As it marks its 70th anniversary, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has intensified efforts to position itself as a centre of excellence in line with the government’s healthcare vision, rolling out comprehensive plans and strategies to achieve this goal in the coming years.
The hospital is currently undergoing major retooling, including the replacement of obsolete equipment and the upgrading of its human resource capacity. This includes the training of specialists and sub-specialists as part of preparations for the establishment of a state-of-the-art cardiology centre.
The cardiology centre, being constructed through the Ghana Health Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, is scheduled to become fully operational in May this year. Ahead of its opening, three cardiologists and other critical health professionals are set to undergo specialized training to ensure the facility delivers world-class services.
These developments were disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, during a consultative forum with management, consultants, and senior specialists of the hospital in Kumasi.
The engagement formed part of activities marking the hospital’s 70th anniversary, celebrated under the theme: “70 Years of Impacting Lives: The Role of Quality in the Pursuit of Excellence.”
The forum served as a strategic platform to deepen collaboration between hospital management and senior specialists, who are regarded as the backbone of the facility, particularly in the delivery of clinical care.
Dr. Baidoo reiterated management’s vision of transforming KATH into a centre of excellence in clinical services, research, and medical education. He emphasized that the pursuit of quality must go beyond slogans and be driven by a systematic commitment to patient safety, efficiency, effectiveness, and patient-centred care.
“Our quest for quality cannot be a mere catchphrase,” he said. “It must be a deliberate and consistent pursuit anchored on safety, efficiency, and excellence in service delivery.”
The CEO acknowledged existing challenges, including resource constraints and the shortage of some critical staff, noting that these hurdles must be addressed if the hospital is to achieve its excellence agenda. He stressed that excellence does not occur by chance but through sustained engagement and an unwavering commitment to quality.
Dr. Baidoo called for strong collaboration among staff and stakeholders to position the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital as a global centre of attraction over the next 70 years.
