The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening teacher professionalism and improving learner outcomes through enhanced teacher capacity development.
He gave the assurance during a visit to the Accra High School, one of the designated centres for the ongoing teacher licensure examinations, where he monitored proceedings and interacted with candidates.
“This venue hosts the final series of the licensure exams, with 37,000 candidates participating. Of this number, 5,000 are resitters. The remaining 32,000 include many who left school before the Union Government assumed office. They will still have another chance to resit if unsuccessful today,” Hon. Iddrisu explained.
He praised the smooth conduct of the exercise under the supervision of the National Teaching Council, noting that teacher competence remains central to education reform efforts.
“For us, when teachers guide, learners learn. That’s why we prioritize the professional development of our teachers through continuous assessment and training, as outlined in their collective bargaining agreements. This is essential to equip them with the skills needed to deliver quality education,” he emphasized.
Acknowledging the emotional and psychological pressures associated with exams, the Minister encouraged the candidates and expressed hope for their success.
“There are brilliant individuals who may not perform well under exam conditions. We understand that and will continue to provide support,” he said, adding that government is working to integrate the Lashensha—a learning support programme—into the final examination system for future cohorts.
He concluded by reiterating the government’s vision of raising the standard of teacher education without compromising quality, as part of efforts to fulfill its education sector manifesto promises.
“We are committed to producing qualified teachers who will, in turn, guide the next generation of learners. We welcome constructive input but will never lower the bar for quality,” Hon. Iddrisu stated.
