Employees of GCB Bank PLC have donated student desks to Toase Senior High School (SHS) in the Bosomtwe District to help address a shortage of classroom furniture affecting more than 7,500 students.
The donation, undertaken by 42 employees of the bank’s Operations Department Group 8, forms part of the Staff Community Impact Programme (SCIP), an employee-led corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at addressing community needs across Ghana.
The school’s growing student population had placed considerable pressure on existing classroom furniture, resulting in overcrowded seating arrangements and, in some cases, forcing students to use improvised seats or stand during lessons.
The provision of the mono desks is expected to ease the pressure on available furniture, improve classroom organisation and create a more comfortable learning environment for students and teachers.
GCB Bank’s Chief Marketing, Communications and Customer Experience Officer, Cynthia Eyram Ofori-Dwumfwo, said SCIP provides employees with a practical opportunity to identify challenges within communities and contribute to addressing them.
She explained that the programme was built on the principle that employees could make a meaningful difference by listening to communities and responding to their needs.
“Across the country, our people are bringing their time, skills and resources to projects that address real challenges and improve everyday experiences,” she said.
Head of Operations at GCB Bank, Dominic Cobbinah, said the team was motivated by the need to improve the daily learning experience of students at the school.
He noted that access to basic educational resources was essential to creating a conducive learning environment.
“When we observed the pressure on classroom furniture at the school, we recognised an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. We hope these desks will help create a more comfortable and supportive environment for students and teachers alike,” he said.
Receiving the desks on behalf of the school, the Headmaster of Toase SHS, Mr Joseph Britwum, expressed appreciation to GCB Bank and its employee volunteers for the intervention.
He noted that the additional furniture would help improve classroom conditions and enhance the learning experience of students.
To ensure the desks remain useful for years, the school is expected to implement regular maintenance measures, including routine upkeep and periodic repairs.
The project is the 30th of 95 community initiatives being undertaken by GCB Bank employees across the country under the Staff Community Impact Programme.
The nationwide programme brings together more than 4,500 employees organised into 95 groups to implement community projects addressing needs in education, healthcare, water and sanitation, environmental sustainability, youth development, social protection and other areas.
Running from August to September 2026, the initiative aims to positively impact up to one million people through employee volunteerism and practical community interventions.
The donation to Toase SHS underscores the role of corporate social responsibility initiatives in supporting educational institutions and improving access to the basic resources students need to learn effectively.
