The state transport company of Ghana, under the leadership of Nana Akomea, is grappling with severe challenges that are significantly affecting the daily lives of citizens. Key issues plaguing the company include widespread financial mismanagement, poor vehicle maintenance, and favouritism in contract awards, which have collectively eroded public trust in this vital public service.
Financial losses and unaccounted funds, coupled with allegations of embezzlement and misappropriation of resources, have further complicated the situation. Vehicles in disrepair compromise safety, leading to frequent accidents and breakdowns. Additionally, there is a lack of transparency in contract awards, with contracts often granted to companies with questionable credentials. Favouritism and nepotism in appointments have resulted in unqualified relatives and cronies holding key positions. The result is inefficient services, with frequent delays and cancellations causing hardship to commuters and a failure to implement safety measures, despite repeated promises.

It is imperative for the government to take immediate action to address these issues, ensure transparency and accountability, and restore public faith in this critical public service.

Call to Action:

The government of Nana Akufo Addo/Bawumia and NPP must conduct an immediate audit and investigation into financial management, with full disclosure of findings.
Transparency in contract awards and procurement processes, with open tendering and competitive bidding.
Urgent attention to vehicle maintenance and safety, with regular inspections and repairs.
A comprehensive review of the state transport company’s structure and operations, with a view to reform and modernization.
Accountability for those responsible for the current state of affairs, with appropriate sanctions and consequences.
Engagement with stakeholders, including workers and commuters, to ensure a people-centered approach to reform.
The state transport company of Ghana is at a crossroads, with mismanagement and corruption threatening its very existence. It is time for decisive action, transparency, and accountability. The citizens of Ghana deserve a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system. We urge the government to take bold steps towards reform, to restore public trust, and to ensure a brighter future for all. The time for change is now.
