In a stunning revelation, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a prominent Ghanaian lawmaker, has disclosed newly intercepted documents that shed light on the clandestine resignation of Ghana’s Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, from his position as Secretary to the Executive Council of the controversial “National” Cathedral of Ghana.

The scandal-plagued project has been under intense scrutiny, and the AG’s resignation adds a new twist to the unfolding saga.

According to the intercepted documents, on January 19, 2023, Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame quietly stepped down from his role in the Executive Council of the National Cathedral. His departure was reportedly kept hidden from the Ghanaian public until now. Following his resignation, he was replaced by Sena Chartered Secretaries Ltd. on March 16, 2023.
Political analysts are speculating that Dame’s decision to resign discreetly was a strategic move to distance himself from the ongoing controversies surrounding the billion-dollar legacy project, often touted as President Akufo-Addo’s topmost priority. The cathedral project has been fraught with allegations of mismanagement, financial irregularities, and a lack of transparency, tarnishing its reputation in the public eye.
In his resignation letter, Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame reportedly emphasized that his involvement in the cathedral affairs had been “limited,” implying that he may not have been significantly implicated in the controversies surrounding the project. However, Ablakwa’s exposé has brought the details of his resignation to the forefront, leaving many questions unanswered.
The AG’s departure from the “National” Cathedral project has raised eyebrows, with citizens and experts questioning the timing and the motivations behind his decision. Some have likened his resignation to the biblical figure of Pontius Pilate, who infamously washed his hands of responsibility in a momentous historical event.
President Akufo-Addo’s strong endorsement of the ambitious cathedral project, calling it his “priority of priorities,” has made it a subject of intense national debate. With Dame’s resignation now in the public domain, the pressure on the President and his New Patriotic Party (NPP’s) government to address the issues surrounding the cathedral has intensified.
As the story continues to unfold, Ghanaians await further responses from both the government and Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame himself. The extent of Dame’s liability in the cathedral affairs remains uncertain, and only time will tell if his apparent attempt to distance himself from the project will stand the test of public scrutiny.
For now, the nation remains gripped by the unfolding revelations, and the future of the scandal-dominated “National” Cathedral of Ghana hangs in the balance.
The Nana Addo/Bawumia government’s response to the allegations and further developments in this matter are yet to be made public.
