The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of National Entrepreneurial and Innovation Programme ( NEIP), Mr.Kofi Ofosu Nkansah has stated that, the overall aim of NEIP is to support the Ghanaian youth to become self employed.
He was addressing a ceremony to disburse cheques to the beneficiaries in Accra under the Youth In Innovative Agriculture Support Programme.
The disbursement amount ranges between GHS 10, 000 and GHS20,000 with the objective of helping beneficiaries to advance their innovation in agricultural production .
The programme aims at providing a platform to make it fertile for import substitution of crops including onions and tomatoes.
Some of the beneficiaries have existing farms for which they are expected to expand, whilst those with financial support are to leverage the start ups which did not flourish due to inadequate funds.
Mr. Nkansah added that the youth were had advantage from the Programme adding that, there was a ready market for exporting to other African countries making the programme viable.
He believed that, with the application of fertilizers, tools and technology, the expected results in ensuring more yields particularly from those in the cultivation of maize , sorghum, cassava , poultry and livestock would be achieved.
The financial support to youth under the Youth In Innovative Agriculture Support Programme he mentioned, is not going to be the end. “We would continue to provide coaching and mentoring services to them”.
The percentage distribution of funds to the each of the crops include 30 % to maize , 20% to cassava, 35% poultry, 10% to agro processing and 3% to agric technology.
Despite the major intervention to the youth in agriculture Programme, it was announced that there would be an enclave programme in rice production soon.
A representative from the Ministry of Finance, Madam Gifty Nkansah Sekyere entreated the youth to take advantage of the Programme for a better future.
The key component of Ghana Care “ Obatan Pa “ she mentioned was to push the transformational agenda of the government in the agriculture sector to advance food security.
Meanwhile, over 25, 000 Ghanaian youth selected from across the country received financial support from the National Entrepreneurial and Innovation Programme.
They were randomly selected from 40,000 applicants .
