Chief Abubakar Iddrisu Ahmed, popularly known as Jordan, has issued a warning to Muslims ahead of the Eid al-Adha festivities regarding the ongoing anthrax outbreak affecting animals in the northern region of Ghana. The outbreak has primarily impacted cattle, sheep, and goats, and Chief Iddrisu Ahmed emphasized the potential dangers posed by consuming infected animals.
Anthrax is a highly contagious disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. The disease can be transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals or consumption of their contaminated meat. Chief Iddrisu Ahmed, a.k.ka Jordan, being aware of the risks associated with anthrax, advised Muslim communities to exercise extreme caution when selecting animals for slaughter during the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebrations.
To ensure the safety of meat consumption, Sarki Ciessawa Ghana strongly recommended that individuals planning to slaughter animals should have them thoroughly checked by professional veterinarians. This precautionary measure aims to prevent the consumption of infected meat and safeguard the health of the Muslim community.
Speaking to the media on Friday, June 23, 2023, Moshe Passipanga Naba of Greater Accra echoed the importance of caution during this festive season. Naba urged the youth of the Zongo communities, known for their vibrant celebrations, to avoid violence in all aspects of their lives, particularly during the ongoing political campaign season. His plea seeks to maintain peace and harmony among the youth while promoting a peaceful electoral process.
With the anthrax outbreak in the northern region posing a significant health risk, it is essential for the Muslim community to prioritize their well-being and adhere to the advice provided by Chief Iddrisu Ahmed, and other community leaders. By exercising caution and having animals checked by veterinary professionals, individuals can help prevent the spread of anthrax and safeguard their health during this joyous occasion.
The government and relevant authorities are also encouraged to take necessary measures to contain the outbreak and ensure the safety of the general population. Eid al-Adha, which is also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah. Muslims around the world remember this story and honor the spirit of sacrifice by performing the ritual of animal sacrifice (known as Qurbani or Udhiya). The meat is then shared among family, friends, and the less fortunate.
