President John Dramani Mahama has commenced a four-day State Visit to Belarus aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation between Ghana and the Eastern European nation in key sectors including agriculture, education, commerce and industrial development.
The visit, which began on Friday, June 5, 2026, is being undertaken at the invitation of President Aleksandr Grigorievich Lukashenko of Belarus and is expected to open new avenues for economic and technical collaboration between the two countries.
Upon arrival in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, President Mahama is scheduled to lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in honour of Soviet Army soldiers and Belarusian partisans who demonstrated exceptional courage during World War II.
A major highlight of the visit will be high-level bilateral engagements between President Mahama and President Lukashenko. The two leaders are expected to hold private discussions before leading an expanded diplomatic session involving ministers and senior government officials from both countries.
The talks will focus on strengthening strategic partnerships in agriculture, education, trade and commerce, while exploring new opportunities for investment and technical cooperation.
In line with his administration’s industrialisation and food security agenda, President Mahama will travel to the historic city of Brest, where he will tour one of the region’s largest dairy processing facilities known for producing milk, cheese and baby food products. The visit is expected to facilitate knowledge exchange and pave the way for potential partnerships in agro-processing and value addition.
The President will also visit the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex to pay tribute to the defenders who resisted Nazi forces during the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union.
As part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and conservation, President Mahama will visit the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned as one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests.
The State Visit is expected to culminate in the signing of at least four major bilateral agreements designed to enhance institutional collaboration and promote mutual economic growth between Ghana and Belarus.
President Mahama is expected to conclude the visit and return to Accra on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.
The visit underscores Ghana’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing economic diplomacy in pursuit of national development objectives.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, the visit reflects the Mahama administration’s determination to leverage strategic international relationships to drive industrial growth, agricultural transformation and sustainable development.
