The Spain Branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has thrown its weight behind the suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, describing the move as a bold and necessary step to protect the integrity of the judiciary.

In a press statement issued on April 30, 2025, from Accra, the NDC Spain Branch emphasized that while the suspension is unprecedented, it aligns with the principles of transparency, accountability, and good governance. According to the Acting Secretary, Hanson Dartey, the decision taken by President John Dramani Mahama’s administration serves as a critical measure to preserve public confidence in the judiciary, which is foundational to Ghana’s democracy and rule of law.

“The suspension of the Chief Justice is not a matter to be taken lightly,” the statement read. “However, given the circumstances surrounding this action, we believe it is a prudent measure to maintain public trust in the judiciary and to ensure that justice is not only done but is seen to be done.”

The NDC Spain Branch highlighted the importance of an impartial and credible judiciary and urged Ghanaians at home and abroad to support the decision. They also called on investigative institutions to handle the matter with fairness, transparency, and due process.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting democratic governance and expressed hope that the outcome of the investigation would uphold the principles of justice.
