A Representative of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr Miyata Shunya expressed his excitement about how school children under the Project for Improving Learning Outcomes through Community Participation for Sustainable School (COMPASS) are seriously improving in the numeracy.

He made this known at Apedwa MA Primary in the Abuakwa South District during a tour to some selected schools that are part of the Japan Project for Improving Learning Outcomes through Community Participation for Sustainable School (COMPASS).
“I am happy to see that the school children are improving on the numeracy. I will urge the SMCs to put in their maximum best to ensure that the project succeed so that it can be spread to cover the entire country”.

JICA Mr. Miyata stated, has too many schools that they are working with under the Project adding that, monitoring of the schools is a little challenge because some SMCs failed to put in their best to support the project.
The Assistant Headmistress of Apedwa MA Primary, Madam Cecilia Ateimo on her part indicated that, the SMCs have realized that some school children don’t come to school with their books and those that have been coming with the books too, come to school today with a book and tomorrow would not come with it again.
She therefore, pleaded with parents to ensure that their children always go to school with their books.

Madam Ateimoh pointed out that, after the baseline assessment in the beginning of the project, they clearly saw that most of the school children were finding it difficult to do the simple additions and subtractions, long division and others.
“So after we’ve done that baseline assessment, we’ve now realized that the children are improving in the various classes. So we’ve seen improvements. When we started, most of them, especially those we started with three years ago, in most of the classes, people were in level one, level two, level three and can’t work simple addition, and simple subtraction”.
The parents according to Madam Cecilia Ateimoh, still have the motion that it is the responsibility of government under the Free education policy to provide everything needed for the school children hence, failing to support their children education with basic necessities such as pens, pencils exercise books etc.
The Math Catch Up Workbook material was developed by the GES and COMPASS project to catch up the basic math skills on numbers and operations that should have been learned in Academic year 2019/20, which was interrupted by the spread of COVID-19 infection.

Purpose of the workbook Strengthen the basic understandings and skills in the number and operations of previous grades.
Structure of the workbook It consists of 30 days and 1 page per day. The answers are attached to the last two pages. Exercises are given on each page after the examples. The example is omitted if the same type of problem reappears on another page.
