The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to safe and reliable water for all Ghanaians, as the country marks World Water Day 2026.
In a statement to commemorate the day, Hon. Mutawakilu emphasized that this year’s theme, “Water and Gender: Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” highlights the critical role water access plays in promoting inclusion, dignity, and socio-economic development. He noted that access to safe water particularly empowers women and girls, reduces inequalities, and strengthens communities.
He outlined his vision of building a resilient, efficient, and customer-focused water utility capable of delivering sustainable water supply across the country, regardless of location or socio-economic background. According to him, Ghana Water Ltd remains aligned with the government’s agenda of achieving universal water access and contributing to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.
Despite these ambitions, the Managing Director acknowledged several persistent challenges, including pollution of water bodies, rising water treatment costs due to poor raw water quality, aging infrastructure, and increasing demand driven by rapid urbanization and population growth.
To address these issues, he revealed that Ghana Water Ltd is implementing a range of strategic interventions. These include expanding and rehabilitating water systems nationwide, investing in modern treatment technologies, strengthening partnerships, improving operational efficiency, and reducing water losses.
Hon. Mutawakilu also called on the public to support efforts to sustain water resources by paying bills promptly, using water responsibly, protecting water bodies from pollution, and avoiding illegal connections.
He stressed that safeguarding water resources is a shared responsibility, urging citizens to contribute to ensuring a water-secure future for Ghana.
“Water is life, and its sustainability depends on the collective effort of all of us,” he stated, adding that achieving equality through water access requires national commitment and responsible action.
