For three decades, they have done the unthinkable, filled halls, churches, state functions and even royal gatherings without touching a single instrument. Now, Ghana’s legendary Acapella quartet, Alabaster Box, is set to crown 30 years of musical ministry with a landmark concert that promises to shake the soul of Accra and rewrite the rules of gospel performance once again.
On Saturday, February 28, all roads will lead to Silicon House, Tesano, as gospel music lovers gather from 4:00 pm for what insiders are already calling “a night of raw worship and historic harmonies.” The concert marks the grand climax of Alabaster Box’s 30th anniversary celebrations. A journey that began humbly in 1995 and has since evolved into one of Ghana’s most respected gospel legacies.
Unlike many groups whose relevance fades with time, Alabaster Box has aged like fine wine. In an industry dominated by heavy instrumentation and digital enhancements, the group has remained fiercely committed to Acapella music, using nothing but the human voice to deliver messages of hope, praise and deep spiritual reflection. Their sound, now famously branded “Afropella,” fuses indigenous African harmonies with contemporary arrangements, creating a sonic experience that is both ancient and modern.
Saturday’s concert will not be just a performance; it will be a celebration of endurance, faith and divine gifting. Patrons are in for an unforgettable evening of soul-stirring melodies as the quartet revisits classic renditions while unveiling new material that signals the next chapter of their journey.
Adding colour and depth to the night is an impressive line-up of fellow Acapella powerhouses. Groups such as Grace Notes, Soul Street, Sons of God, and Stewards of Grace will take turns to remind the audience why vocal harmony remains one of gospel music’s most powerful expressions. Renowned praise leader Francis Amo, known for his electrifying praise jam sessions, will also introduce a refreshing twist with his novel Gospel Acapella praise experience, guaranteed to lift the atmosphere beyond the ordinary.
One of the night’s most anticipated moments will be the live performance of “Anointing Come,” Alabaster Box’s latest studio recording. Produced by Ebenezer Crassie of Klinic Recording Studio, the song encapsulates the group’s evolving sound while staying true to their spiritual roots. It is a bold declaration that after 30 years, Alabaster Box is not slowing down, but rather it is ascending.
The quartet, Samuel Narku Dowuona (Leader), Gideon Allotey (Bass), Horst Ayub (Falsetto), and Michael Allotey (Tenor), has remained a symbol of unity and consistency in a fast-changing music landscape. Their voices, individually distinct yet perfectly blended, have ministered across generations, cutting across denominational and cultural lines.
Speaking in an inclusive interview with the Daily Democrat newspaper at their office, the leader of the group, Samuel Dowuona reflected on the group’s extraordinary journey with gratitude and humility.

“The Bible says, ‘a man’s gift makes room for him.’ For three decades, God has been faithful to us. We have performed at very notable and high places, including for Queen Elizabeth. These experiences have been humbling,” he said.

He extended a heartfelt invitation not only to long-time supporters but also to the younger generation discovering Acapella music anew.

“We encourage everyone who has supported us from the beginning, and even the younger generations to come and celebrate this great moment with us. For those who cannot be physically present, the event will be streamed live. Interested participants are encouraged to register in advance.”

Beyond performances, the anniversary concert stands as a testimony to discipline, spiritual focus and artistic integrity. With three solid albums, Welcome to Goodbye, Unto the King, and Level Don Change, Alabaster Box has built a catalogue that continues to inspire choirs, worship leaders and gospel groups across the country and beyond.
As Accra prepares for this historic night, one thing is certain: February 28 will not just be a concert, rather it will be a sacred gathering of voices, memories and miracles. After 30 years, Alabaster Box is still proving that when the voice is anointed, instruments are optional.
