In a dramatic power move that could redraw the map of Africa’s gold industry, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has thrown down the gauntlet against illegal mining, smuggling, and shadowy gold dealings, by enlisting the heavyweight World Gold Council (WGC) to engineer what insiders are calling the most radical reform in Ghana’s gold history.
This is not just another stakeholder meeting. It is a declaration of war on galamsey.
At the heart of the new strategy is an unprecedented plan to digitally police every gram of gold mined on Ghanaian soil, ending decades of opacity that have bled the state of billions and fueled environmental destruction. The message from GoldBod is clear: the free-for-all era is over.

FROM MUDDY PITS TO DIGITAL LEDGERS

Sources close to the high-level engagement reveal that GoldBod and the World Gold Council are crafting a gold supply chain so tight that smuggling routes could soon collapse under their own weight. The weapon of choice? Blockchain technology.
Under the proposed Track and Trace regime, gold will no longer “disappear” between the pit and the port. Every ounce extracted, especially from the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector will be digitally tagged, logged, and verified in real time. From muddy riverbeds to international vaults, the journey of Ghanaian gold will be visible, verifiable, and virtually impossible to manipulate.
GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi did not mince words when addressing the implications. “This is about restoring credibility to Ghana’s gold,” he said. “We are creating a system where illegal gold has nowhere to hide.”

WHY NOW? FOLLOW THE MONEY

The timing is no accident. Ghana’s gold sector is booming, but the boom has exposed dangerous cracks. In 2025 alone, small-scale miners accounted for a staggering 53 percent of total gold exports, injecting over $9 billion into the economy. Yet experts warn that a significant portion of that wealth still leaks through smuggling, under-declaration, and illegal operations.
Government insiders say the engagement with the World Gold Council is driven by a simple but urgent reality: Ghana can no longer afford to lose control of its most valuable resource.
The reforms promise more than transparency. They could unlock new international markets, attract ethical investors, and shield Ghanaian gold from being blacklisted under tightening global due-diligence rules.

A HARD LINE ON GALAMSEY, AND A SOFT LANDING FOR MINERS
Contrary to fears of a brutal clampdown, GoldBod insists the reforms are not designed to punish legitimate small-scale miners but to rescue them from exploitation. By formalizing ASM operations, the state hopes to improve safety, stabilize incomes, and finally integrate miners into the legal economy.
The World Gold Council’s involvement adds global credibility and pressure. As international buyers increasingly demand responsibly sourced gold, Ghana is positioning itself as a continental leader rather than a cautionary tale.

A NEW GOLD STANDARD FOR AFRICA?
If successful, the blockchain-backed reforms is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026. This could become a template for resource governance across Africa. Analysts say Ghana is betting that transparency, not chaos, is the future of mining.
One thing is certain: with the world now watching, Ghana’s gold sector has entered a decisive moment. The alliance with the World Gold Council signals that GoldBod is not tinkering at the edges, rather it is rewriting the rules.
And for galamsey operators thriving in the shadows, the countdown has begun.
