In a significant move to combat illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources, the Government of Ghana has formed a partnership with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM). The collaboration was officially announced following productive discussions between both parties, signaling a united front against the environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities.

Under this new initiative, the government will deploy trained water wardens and naval personnel to join GNASSM’s task force in patrolling the country’s water bodies and safeguarding forest reserves, particularly those declared as “red zones.” These areas have been severely affected by illegal mining, which has had devastating consequences on the ecosystem.

GNASSM’s National Director, Alhassan Abdul-Razak, and General Secretary, Godwin Amarh, expressed optimism over the partnership, which aims to ensure the sustainable management of Ghana’s waterways and forest reserves. The collaboration was highlighted during a press conference held in Kumasi on October 4, 2024, where GNASSM emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to tackle the menace of illegal mining.

“We appreciate the government’s prompt response to our call for partnership. This joint effort will help preserve critical ecosystems and contribute to the protection of our natural heritage,” said the GNASSM leadership.

The association further called on Organized Labour, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and institutions, including those advocating for a total ban on lawful small-scale mining, to unite in the fight against illegal mining. GNASSM stressed that addressing the issue requires a broad coalition of stakeholders to protect the environment while ensuring sustainable mining practices.

To raise awareness of the initiative and engage the public, GNASSM announced it will hold a public forum on October 11, 2024, in Osino, Eastern Region. The event will focus on the importance of protecting water bodies and forest reserves and will bring together committed stakeholders.

The GNASSM leadership extended their gratitude to all stakeholders for their ongoing support and encouraged continued collaboration to safeguard the nation’s environmental future.
