At the ongoing Ghana Psychological Association’s 7th Biennial International Research Conference, Mary Anane Awuku, a Serial Entrepreneur and Industrial and Organizational Psychologist, highlighted the crucial role psychology plays in fostering sustainable development, especially in a post-COVID era. Speaking on the theme “Contributions of Psychology to Sustainable Development in a Post-COVID Era”, she delved into how psychology can be leveraged to support entrepreneurial success and government policy.
Anane Awuku explained that her research into entrepreneurship reveals key psychological competencies that distinguish successful entrepreneurs. “Today’s presentation will focus on the psychological competencies that help entrepreneurs apply the right skills to thrive in their ventures,” she said, noting that psychology can provide upcoming entrepreneurs with a roadmap for success.
She further emphasized the need for policymakers to collaborate with the Ghana Psychological Association, as their findings on human behavior, mental health, and entrepreneurship could drive significant improvements in national productivity. “Entrepreneurship is vital to reducing poverty and supporting government initiatives. It’s important that we integrate psychological research into entrepreneurship development and policymaking,” she stated.
As a psychologist and entrepreneur, Anane Awuku advocates for using psychological insights to inform policy decisions, improve mental health, and create an environment where entrepreneurs can flourish. She added that addressing mental health issues, including depression and suicide, among those leading the state is crucial for sustained national growth and productivity.
