In a recent turn of events, Kwesi Ahwoi, a prominent figure within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a formal apology following a comment he made at a reception organized by the Churchstreet group of NDC faithfuls last Thursday. The event was held in honour of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the Running Mate to the NDC’s flagbearer, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
The former Minister for Food and Agriculture expressed sincere regret over the misunderstanding caused by his comment, emphasizing that it was never his intention to imply anything negative towards John Mahama’s potential presidency. He admitted to misspeaking on the occasion and acknowledged the criticisms, although he highlighted that some of the reactions stemmed from a deliberate misrepresentation of his statement.
During the event, Ahwoi’s comment sparked controversy as it was perceived by some as suggesting a lack of support for John Mahama’s potential full four-year term if he were to win the 2024 general elections.
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang addressed Ahwoi’s comment during the event, clarifying the misinterpretation and affirming her confidence in John Mahama’s victory in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Ahwoi’s apology aims to put an end to the controversy that overshadowed the otherwise cheerful gathering. He extended an unreserved apology to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and the entire NDC leadership and membership.
He, however, called for unity within the party, urging everyone to rally behind Mahama as the flagbearer in the upcoming elections.
Ahwoi concluded by emphasizing the need to move past the incident and focus on supporting Mahama as the NDC’s candidate in the December 2024 elections, portraying him as a visionary leader capable of leading the country to greater heights
