Some political analysts have questioned why the Member of Parliament for Assin Central and aspiring presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, and Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is still occupying the position of Board Chairman of the Ghana Gas.
Among the 10 competing candidates for the upcoming presidential primaries of NPP, Kennedy Agyapong is the only candidate who is still holding on to his appointment as the board chair of Ghana Gas.
It will be recalled that Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten, former minister of Trade and Industry resigned from his position in order to contest the NPP presidential primaries. This was followed by Dr Afriyie Akoto, former minister for Food and Agriculture, other competitors like Kwabena Agyapong, Dr, kofi konadu Apraku, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko, Kojo Poku, Joe Ghartey and Francis Addai Nimo do not hold any political appointment. The Assin Central Member of Parliament, was appointed as the new Board Chairman of the Ghana Gas Company Limited in July 2021.
Earlier this year a pro-NPP youth group in the Upper West Region called on all government appointees seeking to contest the upcoming presidential primaries of the party to resign.
The group stated that the resignation would prevent such aspirants from using state resources to fund their campaigns and also promote healthy competition among all the NPP flag-bearer hopefuls.
Addressing a press conference in Wa, the convener of the group, Ahmed Marzuk commended the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen for his decision to resign and asked all appointees interested in the race to emulate the gesture.
“We would like to use this medium to urge all current ministers and party members holding other portfolios in government who intend to run for the NPP flagbearer position to follow the example of Alan and resign.”
The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr, Owusu Afriyie Akoto also quit his position to focus on his presidential ambition.
