Bawku Senior High School is about to celebrate its 60th Anniversary but, is facing the challenge of classroom furniture for both staff and students.
This was disclosed by the school Headmaster, Rev. Dr. Sylvester Agalga when presenting the situational report during the official launch of the school’s 60th Anniversary celebration in Accra.
“Bawku Senior High School is bedeviled with many challenges worth presenting to the BOSA fraternity”.
Other challenges confronting Bawku SHS he mentioned, has to do with the small sized assembly hall that is unable to accommodate all staff and the over 2000 students of the school.
Again, he complained about the inadequate teaching and learning materials ( Core textbooks and elective textbooks).
“The School is currently saddled with the problem of choked toilets that need to be dislodged. The cost of dislodgment is very high for school management to be able to tackle single handedly from its meagre recurrent funds. This problem has led to open defeacation around the girls dormitories by the girls. I therefore wish to appeal to all the stakeholders of the school, particularly BOSA, and the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council to come to the aid of the school in this regard”.
Furthermore, he said there is no official means of transport for the headmaster since he assumed headship of the school.
Rev. Dr. Agalga averred that, some classrooms are in a bad state of disrepair and needs renovation likewise, the two hundred seater ICT laboratory is under-resourced and needs retooling.
According to him, the protracted inter-ethnic conflict in Bawku has resulted in the lack of teachers for some subject areas like Science, English and Social studies.
“As many as about 19 staff, got themselves transfers out of the school due to the on-going inter-ethnic conflict in Bawku. The resultant effect is that some subject areas like Integrated science, Social studies and English have not the full complement of teachers needed in those areas. However, school management has been able to tackle the problem of lack of social studies teachers somehow, by redeploying some of the excess social science teachers to handle the Social studies which is a vital core subject for the General Arts, Business, Home Economics and Visual Arts programs. It must be noted however that the same cannot be done for English and Integrated science. School management is therefore appealing to all its major stakeholders to come on board to help find solutions to this staff deficit that the school is grappling with”.
Rev. Dr. Sylvester Agalga however assured that, the School is well positioned to deliver on its mandate to its stakeholders despite its numerous bottlenecks that have bedeviled its operations. “School management is poised to sustain and improve upon its record breaking results of the 2021 and 2022 WASSCE”.
