A Civil Society Organization (NGO), Anchoring Democracy Advocacy Movement (ADAM-GH), has accused the Government of using Soldiers and National Security personnel to fight and kill innocent people in the Bawku conflict.

This was revealed at a press conference presented by the Executive Secretary , Mr. Azubila Emmanuel Abdul-Salam in Accra.

“Since the resurgence of the so-called chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, soldiers and national security personnel have openly taken over this conflict fighting for one faction in what now appears to be the “State versus the indigenous people of Kusaug”.

He disclosed that, nearly One Thousand innocent lives have been killed in the Bawku municipality and its environs through what he alleged appears to be a state-sponsored conflict.
He also expressed concern about Government’s lip service about its commitment to find a lasting solution to this conflict but in reality it is obvious that the government is rather the enabler, killing innocent souls in Bawku.
High profile personalities in this government are twisting the arms of the security to fight tribal conflict
With the Kusasis being the most vulnerable to these unnecessary attacks from the State security acting with impunity, a perfect dress rehearsal for the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections this year, 2024″.

Soldiers and National Security elements Mr. Azubila Salam alleged, had killed women and children and sets a 4-year old child ablaze in the presence of his mother and when the mother cried and fetched water to quench the fire, the soldiers shot the mother as well.

He further alleged that, members of the military belonging to one of the feuding tribes were deployed to Buabula, a Kusasi community where they killed people indiscriminately and in the attempt to resist further attacks by the community, 3 members of the genocidal soldiers died as a result.

Mr. Azubila revealed that, early last year, national security personnel in military uniforms and armoured cars stormed an area called Buabula again and killed 8 unarmed innocent Ghanaians.

“A National Security operative by name Fatau Nambe was killed on the battle front wearing military uniforms. This happened when the people picked up intelligence that this national security personnel was going to storm a community that night with his team to kill innocent people but Luck eluded him and he was neutralised on the battlefield”.

Mr. Abdul-Salam averred that, towards the end of 2023, the so called national security personnel went on their usual operations, carrying weapons and ammunition in a Toyota V8 passing through Garu in the night, and was caught by the vigilant youth of Garu who handed them over to the police. “These patriotic actions of the people of Garu caused soldiers and national security to storm Garu and brutalise the people in the community resulting in the death of one person and many left paralysed”.

He further alleged that just last week, a national security officer by name Sariki went and shot at people at Avenor in Greater Accra Region injuring 4 people including one Ga man who is currently in a critical condition.

The national security guy he indicated, was arrested by police in the Greater Accra Region and is now facing trial.

The Group added that, 3 unarmed innocent Ghanaians at Sabongari were also ambushed by soldiers, who carried them away to brutalise them, brought them back, and shot them to death.

They said it is very unfortunate that some soldiers are bias in the Bawku conflict and seem to have interest in the over 2-year long conflict saying, the biased nature of the Ghana Armed Forces in Bawku has caused the nation an international embarrassment, with worldwide condemnation.

“Unarmed civilians cannot be used as guinea pigs or used for shooting practice by our soldiers in Bawku. It is a big shame for the Ghana Armed Forces as an Institution”.

He stated, “We are therefore bringing this genocide and inhumane action of our soldiers and their counterparts in the national security sector to the attention of Ghanaians, especially as we are heading towards December 2024 elections: we are sitting on a time bomb as a nation! The Ghana Armed Forces and national security we used to know is not what we have now. This should be a worry to us all as Ghanaians”.
