Unprecedented. The President of Malawi has announced stringent measures on all state actors in a bid to curtail what he called “baseless and useless expenditures” draining the state coffers.
In a televised address, the president said, he had inherited a sleaze economy which he had no choice but to take painful measures to clean-up.
He said, he was aware citizens had been incited by the destructive forces to attack him in all manner of bombardments but he will stay the course to purge the system.
The President said, he would lead by example by not attending the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai. He immediately authorized ministers of state who were overseas conducting official business to cut short, and return to Malawi.
The President extended the travel freeze to other state actors, but said essential travels would only be authorized by his office.
Local travels and training activities within the official setting would have allowances slashed by half, with one of the unprecedented actions being the total cancellation of fuel allocations to all officials.
