The Head of Public Sector Governance of Commonwealth Secretariat, UK, Prof. Roger Koranteng has stated that one thing anyone in position of authority needs in other to inspire action and achievement, it is effective leadership and management.

He indicated, is integral to organizational effectiveness to create positive organizational cultures, strengthen motivations, clarify mission and organizational objectives and steer organizations to more productive and high performing outcomes.

Prof. Roger Koranteng made this statement when giving an overview of the Ghana Immigration Service Senior Leadership and Management programme as a resource person held in Accra.

The programme is designed to equip security officials with Innovative skills to effectively contribute to manage organizations towards achieving their mandate.

“Prof. Koranteng stated,” As developing countries continue to combat crimes and law enforcement challenges, it is prudent to acknowledge that our tasks are quite significant as domestic and cross-border crimes and law enforcements challenges have become far more sophisticated in our technologically driven world. It is more important now, more than ever, that Senior management of Law enforcement agencies are kept abreast with current and effective skills and knowledge to effectively lead and manage their resources for the fight against all forms of crimes”.

He revealed that, to ensure a smooth and effective management of organizational development, leadership is key in producing greater interventions based results.

He therefore, tasked leaders in organizations to become prudent to influence, involve and gain support from those they are leading. “The styles of leadership have changed with the passage of time and needs of the situation”.

” In recent time, autocratic leadership style has changed into transformational leader, servant leader, democratic/participative and transactional leadership”

Great leaders he averred, inspire people who work under them and give those who have grown professionally more responsibility and leadership role. “Great leaders also mentor and gloom subordinates who can fill future leadership position”.

He mentioned that effective leader, must understand the principles of human behavior and the factors that positively and negativity influence performance. ” He or she must also be familiar with employees’ characteristics such as skills, desire for achievement and work commitment saying, they are linked to individual work performance.

” While leadership is about influencing employees’ behavior and performance. Management is concerned with using the resources of the organization to achieve the organization’s objectives. Its purpose is to use these resources effectively and efficiently so that the objective of the organization are achieved with a minimum of cost”.

Capacity building Prof. Roger Koranteng revealed, is a critical element in developing human capital in the public service, and particularly in institutions at the forecourt in fighting crimes and corruption.

“We at the Commonwealth Secretariat view increased access to learning and development opportunities for Senior Management of Law enforcement Agencies as critical to creating a more agile, resilient, and responsive crime-busting Institutions”.
