The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Executives for Madina Constituency, has praised their Member of Parliament, Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu for his extraordinary achievement within two years in office.
This came to light at a press conference organized by the Communications bureau of the Madina Constituency NDC and address by the Constituency Secretary, Abdul-Razak Husseini.
The theme for the press conference was, “Know what your MP has done after two years of transformational and impactful “.
The Madina NDC in two years ago, clinched back the Parliamentary Seat from the NPP during the 2016 Elections.
Hon. Sosu, secured 61,274 votes as against 46,525 votes of the NPP candidate to win the seat.
The Executives highlighted the significant accomplishments of Hon. Sosu since he was sworn into office for past two years, in the spirit of Probity, Transparency, Accountability and Social Justice.
The Executives revealed that, over the period, the MP has been working in and outside of Parliament to provide an honest, inclusive, open, and quality parliamentary representation with the support of the Party and entire Constituency.
“Since being sworn into office, our MP has introduced nine (9) new Private Member’s Bills in Parliament – the most by any MP in both the 7th and 8th Parliaments. Thus, since the enactment of Private Member’s Bills”.
Among the achievement they indicated include;
Bill to amend the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960 (Act 29) to substitute life imprisonment for death penalty;
Also, Bill to amend the Armed Forces Act 1962 (Act 105) to substitute life imprisonment for death penalty;
Bill to provide compensation for wrongful arrest, detention, prosecution and incarceration;
Bill to outlaw witchcraft accusations
Bill to amend the Legal Professions Act 1960 (Act 32) to open up legal education and redefine the functions of the General Legal Council (GLC);
Bill to amend the NHI Act 2012 (Act 852) to ensure that persons suffering from mental health disorder receive free treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS);
Bill to provide for free cancer and tumour treatment for children holding valid NHIS cards in all public and private hospitals;
Bill to ensure the cost of issuing Medical Forms to victims of sexual violations and domestic violence are covered under the NHIS; and
Bill to ensure five percent (5%) minimum employment of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in all public and private sector Institutions in Ghana.
On the issue of Community development, the Executives pointed out that Hon. Xavier Sosu within just two years as MP has been able to establish the Madina Job Center to reduce poverty in the Constituency by fostering decent jobs and socio-economic growth (SDG 1&8) as well as providing young people with applicable skills.
“As we speak, the Madina Job Center, has facilitated over 5,600 opportunities through job connections, apprenticeship and vocational training; Youth in Driving and Riding Initiative; agribusiness training for youth and women in mushroom, rabbit and poultry production; Youth in Fashion Design; Youth in website development and graphic designs, among others”.
The Job Center they mentioned would this year, launched some product offerings such as Madina Bakery, to ensure value addition and boost the productivity and incomes of young persons within the Constituency.
“Under the auspices of the Madina Job Center, innovate projects such as Christmas Carnival and Compassionate Outreaches have been embarked upon during Christmas”.
Other achievements of Hon. Sosu the Executives stated, have to do with the introduction of Best Teachers’ Awards with the overall best Teacher winning a Car annually, with collaboration and sponsorship from the Samson Amoateng Foundation and House of Miracle Church.
The Education Scholarship Opportunities to compliment GetFund Scholarships.
Basic Schools Library Project to improve Reading, Writing and Arithmetic at basic level.
Reconstruction of the Babayara School Bridge to improve attendance to school as well as teaching and learning; and
The Introduction of Water for All Project to construct mechanised boreholes for all basic schools in Madina for the benefit of 30,000 pupils, among others.
He has also instituted the Islam Project, a special initiative bto reach out to the muslim community in Madina, and ensure improved living standards among constituents residing in the zongos and the promotion of Islam. In the last two years, the Islam Project has embarked upon.
Furthermore, the introduction of Islamic Education Development Program of Madina (IEDPM) to ensure reorganization and harmonization of teaching and activities of Islamic schools in order to improve literacy of students in Makarantas.
Other achievements include the Annual Ramadan Outreach to the Islamic Community.
The Annual Sosu Children’s Salafest.
The Distribution of Cows to various Stakeholders for Eidul-Adha celebrations; and
Educational Outreaches in Zongo, among others.
He has again established the he Health Project in the Office of the MP to achieve SDG 3 which reads Good Health and Wellbeing Madina.
It was revealed that in the last two (2) years, the Health Project has embarked upon quarterly free medical outreaches for communities within the Constituency – with eight (8) community outreaches so far;
Also, donated health equipment to selected hospitals; including the Danfa health center.
Provided support for completion of maternity ward at Madina Poly Clinic located at Rawlings Circle.
Released funds for the walling of the Teiman CHPS compound.
Provision and upgrading of health facilities in Madina.
Provided financial assistance as well as raising funds for constituents with unique medical conditions whose treatment they cannot afford; and
Registered constituents unto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Among the infrastructure projects of the MP in the past two (2) years include:
Leading the way to grade the Danfa road to ensure ease of movement on the stretch, whilst using Parliamentary questions and statements to demand for fair share of roads and drainage projects across the constituency; and
Distribution of over 800 Streetlights through the various assembly representatives and other key Stakeholders such as health and educational institutions as part of efforts to illuminate the Constitueny.

MP in collaboration with residents of UT Estate graded the road from the junction to the front of the estate.
